Orchestra Winds and Brass

Principal wind and brass musicians from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and The Philadelphia Orchestra will guide young artists in this workshop through the process of auditioning, rehearsing, and performing with professional orchestras. During the week, participants will have the opportunity to learn about orchestral culture and train for a career in an orchestra through private lessons, sectional rehearsals of major brass and wind repertoire, lunch discussion sessions, concerts of all three participating orchestras, and public mock auditions on November 11 and 12 at Carnegie Hall with a panel of the workshop's distinguished faculty members.

Faculty for this workshop includes: Joseph Alessi (Principal Trombone, The Gurnee F. and Marjorie L. Hart Chair, New York Philharmonic), Elaine Douvas (Principal Oboe, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), Carol Jantsch (Principal Tuba, The Philadelphia Orchestra), Julie Landsman (Principal Horn, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), Daniel Matsukawa (Principal Bassoon, Richard M. Klein Chair, The Philadelphia Orchestra), Ricardo Morales (Principal Clarinet, Leslie Miller and Richard Worley Chair, The Philadelphia Orchestra), Michael Parloff (Principal Flute, The Beth W. and Gary A. Glynn Chair, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), and Philip Smith (Principal Trumpet, The Paula Levin Chair, the New York Philharmonic).

General Information

There is no tuition for this workshop. For participants coming from outside of New York City, travel and shared housing will be arranged and paid for by Carnegie Hall. Participants must be available for the duration of the workshop, including evenings, and are expected to attend all workshop sessions.


Requirements and Application

Applications will be accepted from wind and brass players between the ages of 18 and 30. Approximately 16 to 20 participants will be selected to participate in the workshop.

Application
Please complete the application form found here and return it with the following:

  • A current résumé including: teachers, master classes, performing experiences, education/training, festivals, and awards.
  • Two letters of recommendation from present or former music teachers or from musicians of high standing. Recommendations may be mailed or emailed separately from the application but must be marked clearly with the workshop name and the applicant's name.
  • An audition recording, as described in the application.
  • A non-refundable application fee of $40, payable by check or money order (to The Carnegie Hall Corporation) or credit card. A credit card form can be downloaded here.
All materials must be received by Carnegie Hall no later than Monday, September 1, 2008.

Applicants will be informed of their workshop status on or before Tuesday, September 30, 2008.


Auditing

The workshop will be open to auditors during the portions of the workshop held at Carnegie Hall. Auditors will receive a complimentary ticket to the workshop's concert. The workshop schedule will be sent to auditors upon receipt of the registration form found here. The fee for auditing is $30 per day.
